Buyer’s guide

The best puzzle games in 2026

Almost every puzzle game at the top of the charts is free, and pays for itself afterwards with ads, timers and currency. This list is mostly the other kind: games you buy once for the price of a coffee and then simply own, with nothing interrupting them and nothing left to sell you. We ranked on what can be checked rather than claimed — the App Store rating, how many people left it, and when the game last shipped an update — and where a great game has not been touched in years, we say so in its entry instead of quietly leaving the date out.

The ranked list

1
Monument Valley logo
Monument ValleyBest overall

$3.99 once, and the clearest argument this list makes. You guide a character through Escher-style impossible architecture by rotating the structure itself, and nothing ever interrupts you to sell anything. 4.77 from 15,804 App Store ratings, last updated 8 May 2025.

2
Mini Metro logo
Mini MetroBest replay value

Draw a subway map, then keep redrawing it as the city outgrows your trains. The deepest replay value here for $3.99 — 4.86 from 31,461 ratings. Buy this listing, not the Mini Metro+ one: that is the Apple Arcade edition and needs a subscription.

3
Baba Is You logo
Baba Is YouMost inventive

The rules are blocks on the board — push the words WALL IS STOP apart and walls stop stopping you. The most inventive design on this list at $6.99, but check the signal before buying: 4.63 from just 362 App Store ratings, a far thinner base than anything else here.

4
The Room Three logo
The Room ThreeBest rated

A tactile puzzle-box game and the best-rated entry on this list — 4.94 from 33,841 ratings, at $3.99. The honest caveat: its last update was June 2018. It is still on sale and still loved, but eight years without maintenance means more compatibility risk with each iOS release.

5
Monument Valley 3 logo
Monument Valley 3Best free to try

The newest in the series, 4.85 from 4,134 ratings. Free to start: Apple’s listing describes playing the first two chapters, then unlocking the full game and its Garden of Life expansion with a single purchase. A demo with one unlock, not a free-to-play economy.

6
Blackbox logo
BlackboxBest to start with

Puzzles you solve without touching the screen — the answers involve the device itself. Free, 4.80 from 107,698 ratings, and updated 14 July 2026, among the most actively maintained here. The one to try first if you are not sure you like puzzle games.

7
Gorogoa logo
GorogoaMost beautiful

A wordless puzzle built from hand-drawn panels you slide and overlap to keep a story moving. $4.99, 4.63 from 2,288 ratings. Same caveat as The Room Three, stated plainly: last updated January 2019, so you are buying something nobody is actively maintaining.

8
Flow Free logo
Flow FreeBest free classic

Join matching colours without crossing paths. The default recommendation for over a decade, with 400,590 App Store ratings — more than every other game on this list combined — at 4.78. Free, and the least demanding thing here, which is the point.

9
Lost in Play logo
Lost in PlayBest for families

A wordless point-and-click adventure of small self-contained puzzles, following two siblings through an imagined world. 4.86 from 11,363 ratings. The most child-friendly entry without being a children’s game, and the only one built as a story rather than a level list.

10
KAMI 2 logo
KAMI 2Best minimalist

Flood the board to a single colour in as few moves as the level allows, themed around folded paper. Free, 4.74 from 15,001 ratings. The most visually restrained game here and the one that most rewards planning the whole solution before your first move.
