About Readeck

Readeck is an AGPL-licensed read-later app you host yourself, and it is the easiest of the self-hosted options to actually stand up: one Docker line or a single static binary, no separate database server, and the project says it "will perform well enough on the old RaspberryPi 2 you forgot in a drawer". Its export is the best in the category and the reason it belongs in any piece about apps dying: EPUB per article or collection, an OPDS catalogue, CSV, bookmarks HTML, and a full-profile ZIP that can be re-imported into any other instance. It reads offline, supports colour-coded annotations, exports collections as e-books, and has KOReader and Obsidian plugins, which makes it the best fit here for e-reader owners. It also takes an explicit stance against AI: "As a project, Readeck doesn’t accept AI made contributions… Inside Readeck itself, you’ll never find a chatbot." Two limits to be clear about: there is no hosted option — the site says one is coming in 2026, having already missed a promised Q1 2026 launch — and the official Android app is still listed as coming soon.
