Adblock Plus, from eyeo, has 37,000,000 Chrome Web Store users at 4.4 stars and 2,748,855 average daily users on Firefox. The thing to know before installing it is Acceptable Ads: the programme still exists, it is enabled by default, and eyeo charges a licensing fee to large platforms that benefit commercially from it, with an independent committee governing the criteria. Turning it off takes two clicks — the toolbar icon, then the gear, then General, then uncheck Acceptable Ads. On the technical side, uBlock Origin’s author criticises its Manifest V3 build for force-restarting its service worker roughly every 30 seconds when idle to hold on to imperative behaviour.
